About Our Services
Health and Counselling Services (HCS) is a multidisciplinary healthcare facility. Our team includes professionally trained patient care coordinators, nurses, a lab technician, physicians and psychiatrists dedicated to supporting your health and well-being.
Who We Serve
Currently enrolled students at Carleton University and professional services employees, faculty and continuing employees who do not have a dedicated physician may use this service as their regular family doctor. They may see the walk-in doctor for episodic care.
“Health services” for CUASA retirees means access to special vaccination clinics and urgent walk-in services. Please note it does not include access to ongoing primary medical care. CUASA retirees currently using Health Services for their primary medical care may continue to do so until they find alternative primary care, which they are obligated to do, as per an agreement with the Carleton University Academic Staff Association (CUASA).
Contract instructors, post-doctorate fellows, researchers, visitors (e.g. guest lecturers, athletes from visiting teams) can come to see the same-day appointment physician for medical problems that are episodic in nature – a cold, an infection, an allergic reaction and so on. They cannot make one of the physicians here their regular doctor.

Nursing Services and Lab Testing Services
You have access to the following services:
- Nursing services for vaccinations, allergy injections (for those with an allergist outside of Ottawa), wound care, and more.
- Lab services for blood draws and electrocardiograms (EKG).
Nursing and lab testing appointments can be booked online or call 613-520-6674 during business hours.
Services Outside Our Scope of Care
If you live within 50 kilometers, you cannot access a primary care appointment if you have a family doctor as per OHIP billing rules.
Students are not able to make primary care physicians their ongoing family physician. Clinic use is only available while you are attending Carleton University for school.
Information for Students with a Family Doctor (Ontario)
If you have a family doctor in Ontario, using our clinic (for walk-in or booked appointments) may count as “outside use” under OHIP. This can result in a financial penalty for your family doctor by reducing their Access Bonus, and repeated use could lead to you being de-rostered from their practice.
We welcome students with Ontario family doctors, but if you plan to use our services regularly while at school, consider speaking with your doctor about temporary de-rostering to avoid any issues.
Note: Visits to urgent care centers (e.g., Orleans Urgent Care), emergency departments, and some specialty clinics are not considered outside use.
Referrals to Specialists
Primary care providers can refer to specialized physicians in the community. It is the expectation that if you have a referral to an external specialized physician in the community that you notify us by emailing hcs@carleton.ca if you no longer need it and/or have left Carleton University.
Please note: there is a waitlist to book an appointment for ADHD assessments with HCS.
If you would like to receive an ADHD assessment sooner, the following resources are available: Adult ADHD Centre and Talk with Frida.
Helpful Information When Visiting Health Services
Arriving for Your Appointment
Please arrive 15 minutes early for your appointment to allow time for check-in and nurse assessment.
If you are running late, call us at 613-520-6674 ext. 0 as soon as possible to let us know.
If you arrive more than 50% past your scheduled appointment time (for example, more than seven minutes late for a 15-minute appointment), your provider may not be able to see you, as most physicians have appointments booked back-to-back.
Please be aware there is a fee for missed appointments or late arrivals over 50%, as this time cannot be offered to another patient.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Please ensure all forms or questionnaires are completed and submitted through the Telus Health Connect App. To access Telus Health Connect, please visit the appointment booking page.
Bring your Campus Card, health card and/or health insurance to all appointments.
Book a Follow-Up Appointment
If you require a follow up appointment, especially for medication renewal, we recommend booking immediately following your appointment.
You can do so by:
- Scanning QR code in the treatment room you are in
- Following your physician’s instructions and going to the front desk to schedule your follow-up
- All nursing and lab visits can be booked through the Telus Health Connect app or website
Booking promptly helps ensure that you get an appointment when you need it.
Request Test Results
Please do not call the clinic to obtain your medical test results.
You must book a follow-up appointment with your doctor to review your results in detail. Only physicians are authorized to interpret and share medical test results.
We will make every effort to contact you directly if any results are abnormal or require urgent follow-up.
Your physician may also send results through our secure messaging. You will receive a text or email to connect to this message in your Telus Health Connect App or through the website. Please check the email you provided to us regularly for notifications.
